Talking through technology

E-mail this story | Print

Technology can help us communicate better than ever, but possibly more for those with disabilities. A center in Orlando is making sure disabled patients have the proper tools they need to live more normal lives. The FAAST Assistive Technologies Demonstration Center at UCF is where people with disabilities can try out the latest devices and learn how to use them.

Technicians program a patient's computer by typing in messages and questions the person might want to say, the patient then selects a phrase to better communicate.

The availability of this type of technology is fairly limited. Children may have access through their schools, seniors may have access through certain agencies, but the Orlando location is one of only five places in Florida offering comprehensive services and support.
