A man who was choking his wife during a domestic altercation was shot and killed by the couple's 17-year-old son Saturday night, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities said the son called 911 from a home on the 7400 block of Burnt Barn Avenue, Antioch, at 10:15 p.m. When deputies arrived, they found Christopher Thorpe, 36, dead in the master bedroom.

According to the deputies, the family, along with a grandmother and two friends, were outside near a bonfire when Jill Thorpe, 35, went inside and was followed by her husband.

The couple got into an argument that turned physical when Christopher Thorpe began beating his wife, the sheriff's office said. The fight moved from the living room to the master bedroom, where, according to investigators, Christopher Thorpe was strangling Jill when the son came into the bedroom with a gun.

The sheriff's office said the teen fired several shots at his father. Christopher Thorpe died at the scene.

Jill Thorpe was struck by a bullet in the right thigh and was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital.

"It's a very tragic case when a son has taken the life of his father," said Debbie Carter of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office as she briefed the media Sunday afternoon.

The mother was treated and released from Lakeland Regional Medical Center after being shot in the thigh. Her son is now in her custody.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is now investigating, along with the Hillsborough County State Attorney's office.  As of Sunday afternoon, the teen is not facing any charges but that could change, officials say.

Deputies reported finding several firearms in the home and said the Thorpes are avid hunters.
