A Manatee County historian is helping to restore something very important that is missing from a Palmetto cemetery.

Roughly 100 people are buried at the Yellow Fever Cemetery, but only 44 of them are in marked graves.

Historian Ken Burton Sr. is working with students at the University of South Florida to identify the unmarked graves.

"This is history, and it's history that hasn't been told, and I'm wanting to tell it," Burton said.

So far, not every unmarked gravestone has been identified.

This weekend, the historical commission met to talk about the unnamed graves.

Despite the name of the cemetery, only 11 people buried there actually died of yellow fever in 1888.  All of those graves have been identified.
