Welcome to the city of Anna Maria, a top tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches.

It's a place no one wants to be in charge of.

For the first time since Anna Maria was incorporated in 1923, no one signed up to run for mayor in the upcoming election.

The deadline for interested candidates to sign up has passed.

A lack of interest has residents such as Sandy Rich baffled.

"It's hard really to believe simply because it needs to be done and you would think somebody would step up," she said.

The mayor position pays $9,600 a year and comes with a two-year term.

Other residents say they're not surprised no one is interested.

"Well, you pretty much have to be retired to run for hte job," Christian Ulanch said.

So who will be the next mayor?

According to the city charter, nothing can be done until after the November elections.

From here, city commissioners will need to nominate a deputy mayor among themselves.

This person will then take over the role of mayor.

Once the group decides on who will take that role, a city commission will open up.

To fill it, commissioners will have to nominate a new commissioner.

In an email to Bay News 9, current Mayor Michael Selby said he was "disappointed" no one stepped up to run.

"Our City Charter outlines the process that is necessary to chose a new mayor from our five commissionersm, so I think a smooth transition will take place," Selby wrote. "Anna Maria will remain 'alive and well.'
