Starting Friday, Plant City is putting fluoride into the city's water system.

According to Bay News 9's partner paper, the Tampa Bay Times, city officials had been talking about fluoridating the city's water supply for years, but put it off due to budgetary concerns.

Now, with funding from the state and county departments of health, the city is able to move forward with the project.

Fluoridation has been a controversial topic on the other side of Tampa Bay, with Pinellas County commissioners voting to remove it from the county's water supply, then reversing that position in November.

The Times reports that Plant City officials have not seen anything like the controversy that broke out in Pinellas County.

City officials said they support fluoridation, calling it "the most cost effective way to prevent dental cavities."
