When school starts Monday, some students will be attending two new charter schools in Hernando County.

The push is on to get a building finished in Spring Hill that will soon be Gulf Coast Middle School, which is one of two new charter schools opening this year in the county.

Joseph Gatti, the school's co-founder, says the focus is on science, technology, engineering and math. It's a copy of another school he co-founded 10 years ago.

"The students are enrolled in all advanced classes, which means there is more rigor to the program," he said.

Gatti says about 110 students are expected to attend. The building won't be done until about Labor Day, so the students will start off the school year in portable classrooms on another campus.

"There won't be a delay from the students' perspective; only from the building," Gatti said.

Down the road in Brooksville, teachers are getting their classrooms ready in a different charter school called Brooksville Engineering, Science and Technology Academy.

Henry Andre Buford, the school's principal, says the middle school will also focus on engineering and technology and there will be learning beyond the classroom.

"We are going to get them out of the classroom to enforce what they are learning in the classroom," Buford said.

There are now a total of three charter schools in Hernando County.
