State officials claim Florida's new online unemployed system is fixed.

But unpaid claims keep adding up and it is causing a burden for residents relying on unemployment funds.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, Florida ranks last in the country in timely compensating the unemployed - mainly because of the state's online filing system called CONNECT.

The system launched a year ago and has been plagued with technical glitches since them. Those glitches have been have delayed thousands of unemployment claims for several weeks.

Based on preliminary data, only 27 percent of claims have been paid on time in the past three months.

"The system wasn't perfect before CONNECT," said Economic Policy Analyst Ali Bustamante. "But by all accounts, it was better than this. Florida's hitting a new low in its ability to process claims effectively."

The state, however, is disputing the continued problems with CONNECT.

The Department of Economic Opportunity said that issues with the online system have been resolved and they say unemployment assistance has improved since the launch of Connect.

According to the Times, before CONNECT launched last year, 78 percent of unemployment claims up to $275 were paid within three weeks.

The claims Florida paid on time dropped to 48 percent, however, in the year since CONNECT launched, making Florida last in the country.
