The High School portion of Cambridge Christian School in Tampa is closed for the rest of the week after a high number of students called in sick.

Tim Euler, Head of School, said they started to notice problems on Monday. He said by Tuesday about one-third of the 9th through 12th graders at the school were feeling sick. Euler said 74 students had called in sick.

Euler said symptoms have run the gamut with many students reporting fever, headaches, and weakness.

He said they decided to call off classes and give the building a deep cleaning.

'We're going to go through to clean the gym, clean the lunchroom, walls, handles, disinfect everything possible, clean the classrooms, hallways, lockers, buses all of those things will be cleaned," said Euler.

Euler said he's not sure what illness is going around but he said some parents have told him doctors suspect it's a viral illness.

He said the school celebrated Homecoming over the weekend so students were together a lot. He thinks that may have contributed to the outbreak.

"Let's be honest, we all work in an environment where we communicate with each other daily and so our students are rubbing shoulders with each other daily and passing germs along and that's normal school," Euler said.

Euler said the Middle School and Elementary School have seen a normal number of absences so classes for those students have not been cancelled.

He said he expects the High School to reopen on Monday.
