A 49-year-old Holiday man who was crossing U.S. 19 in Holiday early Wednesday was killed by a hit-and-run driver, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Around 1:20 a.m., Gary Alan Hetman, 49, of Spring Hill was walking west across U.S. 19 south of Mile Stretch Drive. He stepped into the southbound lanes and into the path of a vehicle that struck him, troopers said.

Hetman died at the scene. The vehicle involved left the scene.

Investigators say they recovered an outside mirror from a red BMW. The red 2003 BMW 325ci convertible was also recovered this afternoon at Ben's Auto Salvage located at 4707 Voorhees Road in New Port Richey, officials said, where it was sold this morning by its owner.

The vehicle will undergo forensic tests to confirm its connection to the fatal crash, troopers said. Anyone with information about such a vehicle or the driver is asked to call the FHP at 813-631-4020.
