The Bay area's oldest Christian congregation kicked off a 10 day celebration on Sunday, marking their 165th year of worship.

The Manatee United Methodist Church has been part of the East Bradenton community since 1849.

Bill Mixon, like many other members, has attended the church his whole life: over 86 years. He says he has fond memories of coming to pray. After all, it’s where he met the love of his life.

“I didn’t like Sunday school, but when I came to Sunday school and saw her sitting there -- that young lady was the prettiest girl I had ever seen in my whole life,” Mixon said.

Bill and Mary were married in the church and stayed active in the congregation throughout their marriage. Unfortunately, in 2009 Mary passed away, but Bill never lost his faith or devotion to the church. Bill’s story is part of the church's long history, filled with so many memories.

To celebrate their 165 years as a congregation, they are hosting 10 days of celebrations beginning October 19, said Kathy Cooke, assistant to the pastor.

“Anytime is a celebration when you are over 100 years old,” Cooke said.

Over the week and a half, there will be live Christen music concerts, a picnic and many other activities that are open to the public.

“We just hope everyone comes out and enjoys it,” Cooke said.

Right down the street, residents can see the original church, that’s now part of the Manatee Village Historical Park. Although it’s building has changed over the years, its members say their values have stayed the same, and that’s what has kept the congregation going throughout the generations.

“It’s always been open to anyone who wants to come and worship,” said Cooke.

Truly a congregation with heart and history that will continue on for generations to come.

Next Sunday, the church members will be dressed in period clothing from the late 1800’s and will host a traditional service.
