St. Petersburg city officials have been trying to devise the safest way to navigate an intersection in the Old Northeast neighborhood.

With a third version of the intersection, they are optimistic they got it right.

The intersection of First Street North and 30th Avenue North was first converted to a roundabout 12 years ago.

"The idea is to calm traffic speed in the area from 35ht Ave down to 25th in the neighborhood," said Neighborhood resident David Stites. "Traffic actually comes down here at 35th and 45th. Most of the First Street traffic ignores the yield, or doesn't see it and puts drivers at risk in the cross street."

In the past three years, First Street traffic stopped yielding in the circle and, officials say, the crashes started happening again. So a four-way stop was implemented - but that did not last either.

Now, there is a medallion in the center of the road, reminiscent of a turning circle. Traffic on 30th Avenue has a stop sign and First Street traffic is free-flowing.

Longtime City of St. Petersburg Transportation official Mike Frederick said the intersection is still under observation but so far, so good.

"We're also going to do camera studies," Frederick said. "Monitor over 24 hours to see pedestrian and bicycle activity. Make sure they're safe as they cross.

"And so we'll take all that information after the studies, regroup and see if there's any modifications that need to be done.  Any tweaks and work with the consultant on whatever that might be."
