A crane operator admits he made a mistake in a weekend crane collapse in Largo that destroyed several vehicles and damaged a house.

Danny Tomas, of Sustainable Tree Care, said he just wants to make things right.

"Obviously, I made a mistake," said the crane operator. “I consider myself a highly trained individual that had a bad day."

A bad day at the controls. Cell phone video captured the frightening moments from Sunday. Tomas and his crew had been hired to remove a fallen tree from a roof, when his crane tips over, crushing a neighbor’s RV, two vans, a car and damaging a home across the street.

Tomas said he is grateful everyone nearby survived, and no one was hurt, including himself. He rolled out of the cab as it crashed to the ground.

"It is still blurry,” he recalled, “I can tell you I waited in that machine till I knew the coast was clear and I had my eyes on a couple things. So, reaction is why I'm standing here today."

The crane operator said he at first thought a piece of equipment broke, and now thinks a lot more may have gone wrong to cause the incident. His goal, he said, is to find out exactly what happened.

“A lot of safety precautions and a lot of codes that we work by, and I don't know if all those were taken that day,” Tomas said. “For me to tell anyone what I think happened would be misleading because I’m not really sure at this point."

Neighbors would like answers, too. Megan Sampson's car was destroyed.

"It was like out of a movie to be honest,” said Sampson, “I looked over and saw the cars, and I thank God they didn't ask my boyfriend to move it like a couple minutes earlier. Because he would've been in there."

Sampson and others are looking for compensation, which Tomas said they'll be providing.  Tomas said he’s already given a small amount of money to some of those affected, while the insurance process gets underway.

"We do run a professional company and we are fully insured. This is a perfect reason why, if you do hire somebody, insurance is very important."

Tomas said he wants to stay in business, and make sure this never happens again.  He started his company from scratch, and said nothing like this has ever happened with his company before.

OSHA is investigating the incident.
