An amendment approved by voters two years that allows local governments to give an additional property tax exemption to low-income seniors could finally be implemented.

According to The Ledger of Lakeland, Polk County commissioners agreed Tuesday to set a public hearing on the matter. Amendment 11's exemption applies to homeowners 65 or older who have lived in the same home for at least 25 years and meet the income requirement, which this year is $27,994. It's optional for local governments and exempts taxable value up to $250,000.

Before Tuesday's vote, commissioners heard from residents who wanted them to act.

According to The Ledger, the County Commission would be the first government bard in Polk to adopt the exemption. The county and cities of Lakeland, Winter Haven, Lake Wales and Davenport all have exemptions stemming from a 2000 senior tax exemption.
