For decades, Ruth Wharton has been the go-to person for books and a lot more in Hernando County.

Wharton has owned The Book Fair bookstore in Spring Hill for 31 years. It's her second home, her pride and joy, but she is giving it up. Wharton's health isn't what is used to be, so she is retiring.

The thought of saying goodbye brings tears to her eyes.

"I've thought about this many times and I just hope I have lots of Kleenex because it is going to be very difficult," Wharton said.

Her bookstore has become a legendary spot in the community. From the outside it looks like a very modest store, but when you open the door and walk inside, you quickly begin to realize there are more than just books inside.

This is sad news to many in the county. Wharton offers more than just books to her customers. Her store is a place to find out what's going on and to find support.

"They come in and talk about their husband that just died or they are all alone or they are sad or maybe they have some good news," she said.

Wharton is hoping somebody will buy her store and continue what she has started. She says she hopes to find a buyer soon, because she wants to retire by the end of January.
