Need a job? There is still a school bus driver shortage in Hernando County.

School leaders are making it work, but some folks are having to pull double duty.

Karen Sartin has a lot on the table these days. She is on double duty, doing two jobs for the Hernando County School District's transportation department.

"We have to pitch in when we can," she said.

She spends most of her time at her desk dealing with safety and training issues for her normal job, but then for four hours in the middle of her day she has to drive a bus.

There's a school bus driver shortage in Hernando so Karen has to fill in.

"Yeah, it is pretty stressful," she said. "It's not easy."

Transportation officials say they need about 15 full-time drivers and about 10 to 15 substitute drivers, and they need them as soon as possible.

A number of other folks at transportation headquarters that are qualified to drive a bus are also doing double duty. William Spencer is one of them. He says if somebody needs a job, driving a bus is something to consider.

"If you love kids and have a lot of patience and are looking for something to do, it's a good thing to do," he said.

Last year there weren't enough drivers either, so school leaders have stepped up their recruiting efforts. They're advertising on the back of their buses and getting the word out all over town.

Transportation leaders say they have bumped up the pay to make it more competitive and full-time drivers get full benefits.
