A pier was dedicated Monday to a long-time Citrus County commissioner who recently passed away.

Officials dedicated a pier at Fort Island Beach to Roger Batchelor. Batchelor was on the county commission for nearly a decade, and was also involved in the community in other areas. Batchelor passed away in September.

Plans to dedicate the pier to Batchelor got underway after a letter requesting the dedication was sent to the commission by five former county commissioners who served with him. They said the project at Fort Island Beach was particularly important to Batchelor, who was an avid fisherman.

The county commission approved the dedication on Oct. 14.

His widow, Amelia, and their daughter, Julie Koonce, were in attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning, as were several county officials.
