A New Port Richey man was killed in a crash on the Veterans Expressway Thursday afternoon.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the unidentified man was driving south on the Veterans Expressway on the overpass spanning Gunn Highway at about 1:15 p.m.

The man's vehicle traveled onto the outside shoulder and hit a crash attenuator located on the right shoulder of the span, troopers said. The crash attenuator was part of a road construction project in the area.

The man's vehicle spun clockwise across both southbound lanes, then overturned several times. The vehicle came to final rest after flipping over the concrete barrier wall along the outside shoulder of the road, troopers said.

The driver, who was not restrained with a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the southbound lanes of the Veterans Expressway.

The man's identity has not been released pending the notification of next of kin.

All southbound lanes are blocked as a result of the crash.  Traffic is being diverted onto Ehrlich Road.
