Two people were hospitalized after a house fire broke out in Tampa early Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to the home on 5305 N. Falkenburg Rd. at 2:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found the single-story home fully engulfed in flames.  They were able to put the fire out in about 40 minutes, officials said.

Officials said the two adults were asleep in the home when the fire started. They were able to get out of the home safely and call 911.

Both residents were taken to local hospitals for treatment of possible smoke inhalation. They are last listed as being in stable condition and are expected to be okay.

The residents said there was a dog inside the home at the time of the fire, but firefighters were not able to find the dog. Officials said it appears as though the dog died in the fire.

"It was a fully engulfed home so we couldn't go in the house because the flames were going through the roof," Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ronnie Rivera said. "The two adults that were inside the home, they got transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation. And according to the resident there was a dog in the home. we can't locate the dog so we're thinking the dog probably perished in the house."

The Hillsborough County Fire Investigator was called to the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
