Hillsborough deputies arrested a man who was wanted for a carjacking in Clearwater Friday morning.

Oren Wickberg Jr., 22, was arrested late Friday morning after deputies said he was involved in a crash in a stolen truck near U.S. 41 and Bullfrog Greek in Gibsonton.

According to Clearwater police, Wickberg's crime spree started shortly after 7 a.m. on the 2300 block of Willow Tree Trail. Police said the 52-year-old victim had started his 2007 Dodge Ram, then went to pick up his newspaper.

That's when police said Wickberg got into the pick-up truck. Wickberg and the victim struggled over control of the vehicle, and Wickberg put the truck in reverse, throwing the victim from the vehicle.

Wickberg was last seen driving from Clearwater toward Tampa, so Clearwater police notified law enforcement officers in nearby jurisdictions.

About three and a half hours later, police said the truck was involved in the crash, which is when deputies took Wickberg into custody.

Wickberg is facing charges of carjacking by Clearwater police. He is currently being held in the Hillsborough County Jail on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and leaving the scene of an accident.

The victim was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
