A speeding motorcyclist was killed early Monday when he crashed into a construction truck on Ulmerton Road in Largo, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Robert Gayle Lowe IV, 35, was traveling west "at a high rate of speed" between Belcher Road and Starkey Road around 3:45 a.m. As he approached a slower moving construction truck, he attempted to switch from the outside lane to the inside lane just ahead of a 2008 Audi A4.

But the Honda 2007 VT600CD clipped the rear corner of the truck. The impact threw Lowe off the bike and into the Audi before he came to rest in the inside lane approaching the intersection of Coral Way.

Lowe died at the scene.

Neither the driver of the construction truck, 40-year-old Robert Heavilin, 40, of New Port Richey, nor the Audi, Casey Whitlock, 28, of Pinellas Park, were injured. No charges were filed.

Westbound Ulmerton Road was closed until around 8:30 a.m.
