Dozens of sea turtles caught in the cold in New England have a new temporary home here in Florida.

The Florida Aquarium is a part of group or aquariums in the state to take possession of some 135 Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles.

"They are the smallest and most endangered of all the sea turtles," said Florida Aquarium veterinarian Susan Coy.

They were found in the Massachusetts Bay, stunned by the cold.

The New England Aquarium pulled them out but didn't have enough room to keep them.

So with help from a U.S. Coast Guard HC-144, they were flown to Orlando Executive airport where aquariums from around the state took what they could handle. The Florida Aquarium took 10 of the juvenile sea turtles.

"My plan is to do blood work on these guys, do x-rays," said Dr. Coy. "I'll check them for any foreign bodies, get baseline date on them. And then we'll start to just nurse them back to health."

Coy doesn't know how long that might take, but once they're healthy, she said they'll be returned to the sea here in Florida along the eastern coastline.
