If your holiday plans include traveling, be aware, a winter storm is looming over the Northeast.  You can expect airport delays in several states, including some major airports in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington DC.

According to Bay News 9 Meteorologist Josh Linker, the Bay area rain is turning into a storm system that will go up the east coast.

"A Nor’easter will be effecting the mid-Atlantic and the northeast," Linker said. "Rain along the coast, heavy snow inland, so there will be airport delays."

You’ll want to plan ahead, though, whether you’re flying or driving to your Thanksgiving destination.  AAA estimates over 40-million drivers will be on the roads, and they’re attributing it to cheap gas.  Right now, gas is the lowest it has been at Thanksgiving in five years.

Veronica Kraft of St. Pete says she plans on driving to see family in South Florida for Thanksgiving, and she says it’s all about being patient on the roads.

"I’m on the roads every day for my job, and it gets kind of crazy," Kraft said. "So I’m definitely aware of the concerns for accidents and so forth, but I just kind of make sure I have enough time and I make a lot of stops so I’m not crazed on the roads."

The Florida Highway Patrol will also have extra troopers on the interstates to help with the increased traffic from November 26 through November 30.  FHP reminds you to obey the speed limit, and keep in mind that traffic congestion and weather condition may require that you drive more slowly.

Officials at Tampa International Airport are also staffing up for the increased number of travelers. They’re expecting about 260,000 passengers to travel through TIA over the Thanksgiving weekend.

You should allow yourself at least 90-minutes for check-in and the screening process.

Wednesday and Sunday are expected to be the peak travel days.
