A Sickles High School teacher has been honored by Gov. Rick Scott for her positive effect on students.

Sue Traynham has been teaching for more than 20 years. She has received several awards throughout her education career, but she said she was shocked by when she learned that she was a recipient of the Governor's Shine Award.

"I'm unbelievablely honored," said Traynham. "There are thousands of fantastic teachers. To be one of them selected, I really feel like I got it for them."

Traynham teaches AP Statistics and Algebra. The students said it's her personal teaching style that makes her stand out from the rest.

"Her teaching style is really good," said her former student Cole Hill. "It's really group focused. She wants you talking to everyone. It's very different from other teachers."

"I try to make sure that I'm using examples that are going to relate to the kids and to what the kids are interested in," Traynham said.

Traynham was one of nine STEM teachers in Florida to recently receive the SHINE award. In the Bay area, Janet Acerra of Forest Lakes Elementary in Pinellas was also honored.
