Drivers who make an illegal turn at a Palm Harbor intersection could be putting Pinellas Trail users in danger.

Drivers leaving Palm Harbor by heading north on Alternate U.S. 19 cross Klosterman Road at the border with Tarpon Springs.  On the east side of the intersection, the Pinellas Trail crosses the road.

It's in this spot that Scott Williams said he sees driver after driver break the law and put cyclists and pedestrians in danger.

"Constantly, the people in front of me run the red light, or the people behind me will beep their horn trying to get me to go through," he said. "I've even, on a couple occasions, had people go around me and flipping me the bird and ... I mean, it's really really bad there."

Two law enforcement agencies patrol this intersection: the Tarpon Springs Police Department on the north side and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on the south side. The Florida Highway Patrol responds for any crashes.

Trail users have a crossing button to push, which triggers a "no turns" sign for northbound traffic. Drivers who make the illegal turn are putting their vehicle directly in the line of pedestrians, cyclists and others who are actively crossing the street.

Ann Price and her husband, David, who live in Tarpon Springs, observed an encounter between the sheriff's office and a wayward driver.

"One day we were sitting here and there was a policeman sitting here, and there was somebody coming and making a right turn on red, and he even said on the microphone, 'Don't do it! Don't do it!' and they did it!" she said.

Deputies will continue to issue citations for drivers violating the no turns sign.
