Detectives said a man faked a heart attack so his friend could steal a shopping cart full of toys from a Lake Wales Walmart.

Tarus Scott, 30, and Genard Dupree, 27, both of Lake Wales, were arrested Tuesday on charges of grand theft.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the men went into the Walmart at 2000 State Road E and filled a shopping cart with toys, including a motorized power-wheel Barbie car, a Leap Frog tablet and a Barbie Glam vacation house.

Surveillance video shows the men walking through the store together. When they reached the entrance of the store, Dupree laid down on the ground while clutching his chest.

"He didn’t even like go down hard on the ground," Polk Sheriff Graduy Judd said. "He just kind of rolled around a little bit and wanted to make sure he created some distraction while his buddy walked out."

Concerned passersby stopped to check on Dupree, which is when Scott walked out of the store with the cart of toys, investigators said.

Once Scott was out of the store, Dupree stood up and left the store as well. The men then got into a silver SUV and left.

Detectives said they were able to positively identify both men as the suspects, then booked them into the Polk County Jail.

Judd said he was surprised the suspects would be so bold, especially as the Polk County Sheriff's Office has recently been cracking down on shoplifting.

However, he said he's not surprised by the tactic they used, if it is a little out of the ordinary.

"I have seen diversions before so it’s not original but it was pretty interesting," he said.

Judd said there is no excuse for this kind of crime.

"If they truly were a needy family, there’s all kinds of charities to include the Polk sheriff’s charity that would’ve helped their family," he said. "But no, they did it the wrong way once again and we did it the right way once again by putting them in jail."

Officials said Scott has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1998. He was released from state prison in 2013 after serving a 10-year sentence.

Dupree also has an extensive criminal history and was currently on felony probation.
