A welfare check escalated to a deputy-involved shooting overnight in Holiday.

According to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, the incident happened after deputies responded to a home in the 3200 block of Windfield Drive. No deputies were injured.

Authorities said a woman inside the home had been badly beaten by the time deputies arrived. And after deputies' verbal commands to her boyfriend, 42-year-old Aaron Martin failed to calm him down, the situation escalated, deputies said.

"We did every possible non-lethal form to ensure this would end safely," Nocco said. "Verbal commands, he would not listen to. We fogged him, he did not respond to the fog, it had no effect on him. We Tased the individual, Tasing the individual only enraged him."

Nocco said there is a history of domestic violence involving Martin, who was in a possible drug-fueled rage when deputies arrived. Martin, who was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition with at least one gunshot wound, has been charged with attempted homicide and battery.

According to investigators, Martin and his girlfriend had already had an altercation before she dropped her children off at her former husband's home Thursday evening. Bloodied and bruised on her face and neck, the woman's former husband attempted to get her to stay at his home.

But she went back to the Windfield Drive address.

Deputies were alerted to the incident later in the evening. When they arrived, they saw the woman through a window unresponsive on a bed. Deputies were forced to kick in the front door and confront Martin, Nocco said.

"He (Martin) picked up a very very heavy piece of furniture and started charging and attacking our deputies," Nocco said. "He came actually outside his doorway which was a clear sign he was attacking us. Our deputies had no other choice but to shoot the suspect to stop him."

Nocco said Martin did not respond to being Tased (or pepper sprayed), suggesting Martin was likely on some kind of drug.

The woman is recovering at an area hospital in protective custody.

The incident is under investigation.
