Two men are facing charges in what the Polk County Sheriff's Office is calling a road rage incident.

The incident happened Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. on Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven.

According to the sheriff's office, Jonathan A. Castle, 30, was driving a 2012 gray Honda Accord while Robert P. Jernigan, 66, was riding a 2008 black Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the westbound lanes of Cypress Garden Boulevard.

A witness, who was in the outside lane, said both vehicles passed him in the inside lane, with Castle's Honda in front and the motorcycle behind, officials said. The motorcycle then rapidly moved into the outside lane, nearly hitting the witness's vehicle, officials said.

At the same time, the Honda also changed into the outside lane, right in front of Jernigan's motorcycle. Witnesses said it appeared as though Jernigan was trying to pass Castle, but that Castle was trying to keep Jernigan from passing.

Deputies said the two men moved back and forth between the two lanes, with Jernigan trying to pass and Castle trying to keep him from passing.

The two men were near the Walmart entrance in the 7400 block when deputies said the right rear of the Honda hit the left side of the motorcycle. Jernigan lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. He was thrown from his motorcycle and landed in the outside lane.

Deputies said Castle fled from the scene of the crash and did not stop to help Jernigan. Castle made a U-turn about 200 feet past the site of the crash, then drove west on Cypress Gardens Boulevard, deputies said.

A witness started following Castle, then called 911 and gave dispatchers a description of the vehicle as well as location updates, deputies said.

A deputy was able to use that information to stop Castle on U.S. 27 near Cypress Gardens Boulevard. Deputies said Castle was taken back to the scene, then was later released pending the outcome of the investigation.

Jernigan was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert. Deputies said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Castle was arrested Wednesday at his Winter Haven home and booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of reckless driving with serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury.

Jernigan has been charged via affidavit with reckless driving. He remains in Lakeland Regional Medical Center in fair condition. He is expected to recover.

The crash congested traffic for several hours.
