Hernando County students and parents may be in for some changes next year when it comes to school.

School leaders said the goal behind the changes is to ensure money and resources are being used wisely. They are considering a lot of ideas, including redistricting or even closing down schools that are under capacity.

A lot of the focus right now is on Westside Elementary in Spring Hill. School leaders say Westside is old and needs a lot of work. They said some of the repairs are needed to make the building safe, and that the school may have to close.

Sharon Arsenault has a daughter that would go to Westside next year. She's not happy about the news.

"I hope that they find a way to fix the school without shutting it down," she said. "That would be great."

Westside parents have started a petition to save the school.

A workshop was held so school leaders could discuss the future of the aging school with the public. Several parents showed up to support the push to save it. There are other options like making repairs or even rebuilding.

Jeffrey Allan is a parent and he wants the school to stay.

"I like the smaller classes because they work with the kids," he said. "They do everything to help the kids."

School board members have asked for more details and plan to discuss the school's future at another workshop next month.
