A man died late Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle in the 3700 block of 66th Street N in St. Petersburg.

According to police, Randy L. Howell, 56, left the Checker's Restaurant on the east side of 66th Street and stepped into the roadway mid-block at 10:30 p.m.

Officials said Howell stepped into the path of a northbound 2003 BMW sedan. The driver, 28-year-old Ramiz Suljic, swerved in an attempt to avoid the man, but still struck him. Suljic stopped at the scene.

Howell was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he was later pronounced dead. According to officials, Howell's blood alcohol content was 0.31 when he arrived at the hospital.  Florida law presumes intoxication at 0.08.

Howell is believed to be a transient who lives in the area of 38th Avenue N and 66th Street. Police said his next of kin lives in Pennsylvania and they have been notified.

Suljic, who was not injured in the crash, is not facing any charges.
