A Catholic school in Citrus County on the verge of being shut down will stay open.

Parents and faculty put up a good fight to keep Pope John Paul II Catholic School in Lecanto open. The school announced in March it would need to close due to low enrollment numbers.

Rebecca Frank's three kids graduated from the school and she wasn't happy when she heard the news.

"Felt like I was losing a family member," Frank said. "Felt like I was losing a family actually."

Parents, teachers and students weren't happy either so they held a rally to push for their school to stay open.

The school was given until April 15 to come up with a business plan to boost enrollment and create a fundraising strategy.

A group of parents got together and did exactly that. Church leaders just signed off on the plan, so the school will stay open.

"Awesome job guys, awesome job," Frank said.

Samantha Sullo graduated from Pope John Paul in 2010. She's proud the school fought to stay open and it will be around for years to come.

"We're hoping to keep it open forever," she said.

The enrollment goal for next year is 180 students. We're told the school is already close to that number.
