A Pinellas County woman wants to make sure dogs get the proper veterinary care.

So, Alicia Smith created Canine Care Tampa Bay, a non-profit organization aimed at filling the financial gap. Smith said the idea came to her at the SPCA.

“I was volunteering at the SPCA and I was disturbed by the number of pets that were turned in due to their owners inability to afford proper health care,” Smith said.

Canine Care Tampa Bay partners with local veterinarians, like the Vet Clinic of Palm Harbor, to help owners keep and care for their pets. Owners can apply to Canine Care, which also helps cat owners, for assistance. If approved, the organization will cover 75 percent of the cost of care.

“I’ve cried with clients quite a few times and also rejoiced with them when we were able to get their pet into a healthier state,” Smith said.

Canine Care Tampa Bay helped its first pet owner in January 2013 and so far, 66 pets and owners have benefited. Karen Rousseau was one of those owners.

Shortly after Rousseau and her husband adopted their dog, Dash, both of them lost their jobs. The couple turned to Canine Care for help. Rousseau said the organization is invaluable.

“Oh my goodness, she is an everyday hero,” Rousseau said. “And the way she responded so promptly. I sent her an e-mail once I found that website. She responded immediately and just comforted me and made me know she was going to help take care of my baby.”
