Pinellas school superintendent Mike Greco wants to expand magnet programs throughout the county.

According to our coverage partners at the Tampa Bay Times, five schools would get new programs.

Clearwater's Sandy Lane Elementary would open a performing arts center similar to the popular one at Perkins Elementary in St. Petersburg.

Tyrone Middle School in St. Petersburg would become a technology magnet.

Largo Middle, John Hopkins Middle and Mildred Helms Elementary would open International Baccalaureate programs.

The School Board received the proposal late Tuesday and will discuss it at an upcoming work session.

The District is pursuing a federal grant to fund the programs.

The county currently has long waiting lists for some programs and applications for them were up overall.

A recent parent survey showed programs in science, technology, engineering and math, fine arts and music were top choices.

The proposal does not include plans for more fundamental schools.
