Clearwater Beach is bustling this time of year making parking hard to find. Now it looks like the city is one step closer to easing some of that pain.

Cars bumper to bumper, beachgoers out and about, barely a place to park -- that’s Clearwater Beach on a Saturday in July.

“There’s no question that there is a great need for public parking on north Clearwater Beach,” said Brian Aungst Jr, attorney for the parking garage developer.

Aungst Jr. represents the developer who is ready to build a major parking garage near Clearwater Beach.

It’ll sit at Mandalay and Baymont near the Sandpearl Resort.

It will have 642 spaces, 450 open to the public, and the rest for businesses, resorts, and nearby employees.

“So not only will it provide much needed public parking on north Clearwater Beach but it will also be a very good revenue generator for the city for years to come,” said Aungst Jr.

Not everyone is happy about the garage though.

The owner of the East Shore Resort and Marina across the street spoke to Bay News 9 on the phone.

He said a garage is needed, but not one that is seven stories high.

He and some other neighboring residents are concerned the garage will be an eyesore and would only create more road congestion.

There are more cars and fewer parking spaces though.

The meters are full, the lots are loaded, and parking is in high demand on Clearwater Beach.

The garage is one step closer to construction following a meeting earlier this week, and that’s good news for many.

Aungst Jr. said the garage should be officially approved in August.

It will be complete by May 2015.
