People who live in Gibsonton will now have a place to finally play basketball, volleyball and pickleball indoors.

Hillsborough County built a new Gardenville Recreation Center in 2005, but the economy benched their plans to build the gym to go with the center.

“Through our community group, the Concerned Citizens of Gibsonton, they really worked for years to build something new out in this community,” said David Ramirez, Hillsborough County Recreation Program Supervisor.

The economy caused the community to halt construction on the gymnasium, which left many kids looking forward to playing basketball inside still playing in the heat.

“It’s hot, sweaty and you want water,” said 11-year-old Anise Lowe.

Hillsborough County funds are back on track and the 9,000-plus square foot gymnasium is finally in the works.

“It’ll be really refreshing,” said 12-year-old Aussie Lowe.

“It’ll be easier for the kids, they won’t have to complain as much,” said volunteer Tabitha Willis.

Officials expect the gymnasium to be completed by the end of the year.

The gym will also house a brand new fitness area with extended hours.
