A Medal of Honor recipient from Polk County is being honored as part of a new stamp commemorating the Korean War.

William Charette was presented with the Medal of Honor by president Eisenhower for his heroics as a Navy medic during a 1953 battle against Chinese troops.

He threw himself on the body of a wounded comrade as a grenade came their way. He also helped carry other wounded men to safety while in great danger during the battle.

Charette's widow, Louise, said her husband was always very modest about the high honor.

"Well, why did I receive this, when my buddy did just as much as I did," he would say.

The U.S. Postal Service has just released Korean War Medal of Honor stamps. There is a picture of Charette and 12 other Medal of Honor recipients on the cover of the collection.

A ceremony was held at Arlington national Cemetary Saturday to mark the release of the stamps.

Louise Charette said her husband knew that the U.S. Postal Service was working on the Korean War stamp project before he died. He gave permission for his picture to be used for the project.

She believes here husband was a hero. She said she had a lifetime of proof.

"Well I consider him a hero because he was the best husband anyone could ever have," she said.
