An exotic lizard from South America is showing up in wooded areas of Hillsborough and Polk counties.

The lizard is called the tegu.

Florida Fish and Wildlife biologists are putting out traps each day to track the tegus down.

"We are concerned with them of course because they're eating our native wildlife and we'd like to know what sort of impact they have with the population," said FWC Biologist Tessie Offner.

Wildlife officials said the exotic lizards were brought over to Florida as pets, but they either escaped or the owners grew tired of taking care of them.

It's unclear just how many tegus are roaming around the Bay area. Once caught, Florida Fish and Wildlife, humanely euthanize them.
