The Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services shelter that currently houses kids who’ve crossed the border illegally, is having to pay the county some money they were granted.

The balance of nearly $167,000 came to light when the shelter recently asked the county for an expansion.

The county found that in 2012, the shelter closed one of its two funded residential treatments meant to house elderly disabled adults.

The move was done by the shelter due to funding cuts. Shelter officials claim they were unaware of any financial obligations.

They also failed to notify the county of their action.

The grant was given to the shelter for 10 years and was supposed to be used on both facilities. Shelter officials paid the county for the four years they didn’t operate that one facility.
