The Lakeland Police Department is taking a fresh look at 37 cold case murders that go as far back as 1979.

One of those cases is the murder of 51-year-old John Walters. On Jan. 12, 2010, Walters was found shot to death behind the Yamis Hair Braiding business on W Memorial Boulevard.

Walters was working as a live-in caretaker at the business. He had fallen out of his van after he was shot, and a bag of groceries was scattered on the ground.

"It's extremely frustrating," Walters' daughter Crystal Brown said.

Brown said she believes someone knows what happened during the early morning hours of the killing.

"No one at the time of the investigation came up with any information to lead us to any suspects," said Det. Brad Grice, who is looking into the murder.

Grice believes there is someone who knows what happened, but that person is not coming forward because he or she is afraid or might even believe the case had been solved. That has happened in other cold case killings.

"When they saw it three or four years later, and they realized it was still open (and) they actually had information and came forward," he said.

Brown is hoping a renewed focus on the case and some media attention will bring progress.

"I do. I have a lot of hope," Brown said.

Brown and her sister have started a foundation in their father's honor. It's called Stand Up Speak It. The group encourages people to come forward with information about crime.
