The application deadline for a new aerospace academy in Hernando County schools has been extended.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, only eight students have signed up for the course at Nature Tech High School in Brooksville.

The school district mandate says the course will be cancelled unless at least 10 students register.

With that in mind, officials pushed back the deadline for freshmen and sophomores to apply to Aug. 22.

How to apply:

Hernando County high school freshmen and sophomores interested in the district's new aerospace academy must submit an application by the end of the day on Aug. 22 to Marcia Austin, the district's supervisor of secondary programs. Austin can be reached at (352) 797-7051 or austin_m@hcsb.k12.fl.us. Students who do not attend Nature Coast Technical High School will have to transfer to the school to be part of the program.
