A woman died Sunday after apparently experiencing a medical problem and crashing her car in a rural-residential area of Fort Meade, authorities said.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the fatality, has not released the woman's name or age.

Around 4:10 p.m, the woman was driving a 2013 Fort Focus south on Charleston Ave. S (U.S. 17). The car left the road around 7th Street SW and continued parallel to Charleston, traveling between power poles and residences.

After crossing 8th Street SW, the car struck the front stoop of a home and was redirected across Charleston Avenue. It struck a wire fence on the opposite side of the road before coming to a rest.

Witnesses approached the locked car, saw that the woman was unresponsive and broke a window to pull her out and start CPR, the sheriff's office said.

Fort Meade Fire and Polk County medics responded and transported the woman to Bartow Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Deputies said speed, impairment and distraction did not appear to be factors in the crash. The airbags in the vehicle did not deploy, but it isn't known whether she was wearing her seat belt.
