A St. Petersburg charter school already caught in controversy now has a parking issue to deal with.

Windsor Prep Academy made headlines this week when it had to turn away more than 60 students because a new building wasn’t finished in time for the new school year.

Now neighbors who live near the school are complaining about an increased traffic problem. A frustrated Jeff Petersen contacted Bay News 9 on Monday night.

“This is yesterday’s mail because I couldn’t get to the mail box,” said Jeff Petersen, neighbor.

Petersen said a long line of traffic blocked him in his own driveway for an hour.

“They just would get out of their cars and walk to the school and they were blocking everybody’s driveway all the way down the road,” said Petersen.

Down on the ground neighbors who live on the side streets said Monday was the worst they’ve seen.

“A mess,” said Dennis Iverson, neighbor.

Neighbors on 52nd Avenue North are upset because people are clogging up the road and blocking driveways.

“Oh, they were parking in my yard yesterday. Cars would drive up and stop and get out,” said Iverson.

Some neighbors believe construction on a new school building is causing the added congestion. That’s the same unfinished construction project that made headlines this week.

It caused the school to turn away 60 new students. Despite that, there are still more students at the school this year. Some neighbors believe that’s causing the traffic headache.

The school’s principal said she is aware of the problem and she’s working on it.

In an email to Bay News 9 Tuesday Jessica Clements said, “We are currently working with the Sheriff’s Department and the Pinellas County Traffic Department to improve the flow of traffic as well as prevent parents from parking on side streets and potentially blocking in neighbors.”

Tuesday the traffic flow seemed to improve. Petersen said he hopes it does so his afternoons are spent stuck in the house.

Clements also said she is letting parents know parking and walking up to pick up their children is no longer allowed.
