The are new signs marking Anna Maria streets - literally.

In a test project to help pedestrians, streets are being marked at crosswalks.

Stop, wait and wave is the city's new crossing motto - and it's painted right onto the roadway.

Yellow signs painted on the crosswalk at Spring Avenue and Gulf Drive are the test project of Mayor Sue Lynn. She wants to see if the markers get people's attention and make pedestrians rethink how they cross streets.

Not everyone is convinced the markers will make a difference.

"I don’t know that they are going to work all that great," said Dan Krenz. "I almost didn’t notice them but I think if enough publicity is made about it people will notice them."

Still, Lynn said the message will be painted at 10 to 14 crosswalks around Anna Maria.

The idea originally came from a resident who recently vacationed in Maine, where similar signs are installed for pedestrians.
