Drivers traveling above the 45 mph speed limit on northbound I-275 through the West Shore construction zone may notice a loud scrape near Dale Mabry Highway, just past the exit ramp.

Most drivers know that traffic during peak drive times travels much slower than the posted speed limit, but during non-peak hours, speeds have been clocked at more than 70 mph.

Those high speeds, combined with a dip in the road, have lead to more than one driver scraping their vehicle on the interstate.

According to F.D.O.T spokesperson, Kris Carson, evening out the surface is a high priority, however, simply pouring asphalt into the dip is not necessarily the answer.

"It's not like patching a pot hole," said Carson. "We want to make sure we do it correctly. We don't just want to fill it in with asphalt and create a drainage problem, so our engineers are going to create a solution this week."

Carson reminds drivers that lowering their speed through the construction zone will also reduce the likelihood of any vehicle damage.
