During hurricane season, Pasco County faces a significant flood risk.

Emergency Management Director Annette Doying said a good flooding plan is a must if the county wants to remain above water during rainy season.

The Emergency Management Office is holding a series of meetings and offering business advice and residents options.

"There is a small number of residents that are that live in repetitive flood loss properties or severe loss properties," said Annette Doying.

Among those residents is Kathy Walden, whose home was severely flooded. Through the county’s plan Kathy’s home will be bought out by the government and returned back to just land which will help prevent flooding.

“We can't stay we can't take a chance on this happening again," said Walden.

Other ways the county is looking at is improving storm water systems.

If Emergency Management officials continues to improve the county and make it more flood resistant- the residents will have the opportunity to receive more discounts on their flood insurance.

So far the county’s latest improvements have helped Pasco County residents receive 20 percent discount on their flood insurance.

The public is encouraged to participate in mitigation planning efforts. Those who are interested in participation should contact the Pasco County Office of Emergency Management.
