A driver is facing DUI charges after hitting an 11th grader walking home from D.W. Waters Career Center Monday, according to Tampa Police.

Police said 18-year-old Monesha McDuffie was walking on the sidewalk on East Osborne Avenue when the driver of a rented white 2013 Ford Fusion lost control, left the roadway and hit her.

Police said McDuffie was dragged under the car, across a yard until the car came to a stop at a chain link fence.

"The neighbors rushed to her aid. They were able to pull her out from underneath the vehicle. Unfortunately, the oil pan burst and this young girl has suffered some very, very serious burns to her chest and mid-section,” said Tampa Police spokesperson Laura McElroy.

Malik Majied, 23, is charged with DUI with great bodily injury.
