There is good news and bad news with the Interstate 275 widening work taking place over the Hillsborough River in Tampa.

The good news is that workers put new girders in place overnight. The bad news is that this part of the widening project has about another month to go.

The contractor's team will place a total of 22 bridge girders over the Hillsborough River in that general area.

The ongoing project means continued road closures at night along the river. Workers need to bring cranes onto the interstate to continue the project, prompting the overnight closure of the southbound Ashley Drive exit.

"This is an important part on the east end of the project," said John McShaffrey of the Florida Department of Transportation. "We are widening the bridges so that ultimately the traffic coming off I-4 westbound and southbound I-275 will flow into the new lanes we’re building in that area."

The entire widening project is at its halfway point.

Officials did offer more encouraging news surrounding the project, saying the southbound exit onto Dale Mabry Highway will reopen sometime in September.
