Empty tennis courts at the North Brandon Sports complex are not an uncommon sight for visitors.

Now, Hillsborough County is looking to get rid of them to make room for the growing Brandon Cowboys Youth Football and Cheerleading Association.

The county plans to do away with the tennis courts and use $46,000 in Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funds to bring in more practice fields, parking and storage at the complex.

"We currently have a few squads that are completely maxed out," said Harley Stafford, Assistant Athletic Director.

The county says only three people sent complaints about the removal of the tennis courts. The team says the space is needed to keep up with the growing number of kids and families coming in.

"Currently we've got cheerleading and football practice on our playing field and we've got football on our practice fields,” said Stafford. “With the removal of the tennis courts, that's going to allow for the football players that are on the field to practice on the practice field with the rest of the players as one team."

When the county does away with the tennis courts, those looking to play the game won’t have far to go. They can go to the Brandon Recreation Center, less than three miles away from the North Brandon Sports Complex.
