Cristobal is hanging on to hurricane status as it moves away from Bermuda.

The third named storm of the season formed Sunday morning as it moved over the Bahamas.

According to Bay News 9 meteorologist Juli Marquez, Cristobal is moving toward the northeast near 29 mph and this general motion with an increase in forward speed is expected over the next 48 hours.

On the forecast track, the center of Cristobal will rapidly move toward the North Atlantic well away from Bermuda during the next several hours and pass well south of Nova Scotia later today.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 75 mph with higher gusts. No significant change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Cristobal is expected to become a powerful extra-tropical cyclone over the North Atlantic by Friday night.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 205 miles.

Two cruise ships that were scheduled to stop in Bermuda were diverted to Port Canaveral instead because of Cristobal. The Celebrity Summit is based out of New Jersey, while the Norwegian Breakaway is based out of New York City.

The Carnival Pride is also coming to Port Canaveral as a port-of-call. It was supposed to visit Grand Turk instead.
