Inmates from Zephyrhill's Correctional Facility could soon get to work around the city.

Zephyrhills City Manager Steve Spina proposed the city participates in the prison's outside work squad program.

Selected inmates will be working throughout the city doing manual labor under the supervision of a prison guard.

Chairmen Charles Proctor said it’s a good way to get more work done for less cost.

"We have a tough budget that we are dealing with this year and it would save us money," said Proctor.

But despite the savings this proposal would bring, Proctor worries about the safety concerns it could create along the way.

He says there are lot of schools in the city and elderly residents.

"We would prefer they are not working near the schools, we don't know their past, I wouldn't want the elderly in our community to feel unsafe," said Proctor.

Zephyrhills resident Kathy Jewels says as long as they are supervised she sees no problems.

"I think that people ought to be out here serving the community and helping save taxpayers a little bit of money," said resident Kathy Jewels.

Money that the city isn't too sure yet if it’s worth saving.

City councilmen have asked the city manager to bring them more information on how this program works as well as some examples of communities that have participated in the program.

The prison guard will get paid roughly $50,000 a year.
