A new warning is being given to boaters during Labor Day weekend.

The Coast Guard is asking that everyone only use flares in emergency situations.

Officials said since a video was taken at the beginning of summer, boaters have cost the state millions of dollars by using flares irresponsibly.

The Coast Guard has responded to more than 60 false flare sightings and each time they set out it costs thousands of dollars.

"We're having to divert other units to a false case when we could be spending resources and time on actual incidents," said Ashley Johnson, Petty Officer First Class.

As a reminder, the Coast Guard responds to any sighting of a red or orange flare as a call for help.
